Blue Beard
Director: Catherine Breillat
Year Released: 2009
Rating: 1.5
Provocateur Breillat settles herself down to re-tell this basic story about a rich - but ugly - aristocrat who likes murdering little girls and hanging them up in one room to bleed all over his floor (apparently they make for very good soup). When Catherine B. doesn't have intensely sexual material to work with there's even less to discuss (or find humor with): this is rather routine and the frame story - with the two girls reading the Bluebeard folktale - doesn't add much substance. Keeping with Breillat's 'feminist' ideology I'm sure there's a warning in there not to trust older men (and/or behead them if need be), although this concern was (most likely) raised in earlier works.
