Shutter Island
Director: Martin Scorsese
Year Released: 2010
Rating: 2.5
Two U.S. Mah-shals (Leo-nah-do DiCaprio and Ma-hk Ruffalo) show up at a spooky, scary island off the coast of Massachusetts to discover what happened to a patient who vanished; doctors Ben Kingsley and Max Von Sydow provide only a tiny bit guidance. It's a nice genre piece for two-thirds of the way - with some glorious dream sequences - with a semi-predictable 'twist' in its last third that some will either applaud or find unforgivably ridiculous. I'm essentially in the latter camp - as groan-worthy as Michelle Williams' declarations are and as implausible as the revelations make the plot out to be it's still hard to ignore the style Mr. Scorsese brings to it: he's not much of a suspense/horror guy (Cape Fear is one of his worst movies), but he handles the CGI pretty well. Uglier than Jackie Earle Haley's makeup: Leo's accent.
