Blood Wedding
Director: Carlos Saura
Year Released: 1981
Rating: 2.0
Saura films a 'behind the scenes' rehearsal of Federico García Lorca's Blood Wedding done in the style of flamenco with famed choreographer Antonio Gades playing the lead role. As a close look at the luscious art of flamenco it's intriguing, but as both an exercise in filmmaking and as an analysis of the Lorca work it is strongly lacking. Saura's camera is confined to a single room and basically rocks back and forth; Gades' interpretation leaves out a lot of the textual elements of the play, which may lead some unfamiliar with the original work to come away from this with a strong need to research what went on (and what was left out).
