You, the Living

Director: Roy Andersson
Year Released: 2007
Rating: 1.5

Same basic deal as Songs from the Second Floor: quirky, mostly static shots of oddballs in rooms doing quirky things: the characters' lives (if you can even use terms like "characters" and "lives") are all marked by sadness and tragedy ... when they aren't just sitting around feeling bad for themselves. It cordially invites you to plug your own meaning into the proceedings, which range from the semi-comical (a man fails at the tablecloth trick) to the outright desperate (a haircut gone awry) and ends with an abnormal number of planes looming ominously overhead. We're all doomed and miserable, okay, thanks for the head's up, Mr. Andersson.
