Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation!
Director: Mark Hartley
Year Released: 2008
Rating: 2.0
Meticulously edited clip collection/advertisement for various genre pictures made in Australia during the 70's and 80's that remain obscure to the general populace for a very good reason: many of them are terrible. Fan boy Quentin Tarantino shows up to sing the praises of several of these dreadful, cheaply made movies, and though his enthusiasm is very real (though sorry Q.T., I don't find car chases sexually stimulating), what remains unsaid is that for all of his passion for trash, he has the genius to translate trash into art, whereas many of these exploitation filmmakers were only capable of making trash (albeit trash with lots of explosions, drug abuse and full-frontal nudity). There's a fleeting attempt to tie the Z-grade cinema to larger political issues at the time - Vietnam! Hippies! Weed! Whatever! - but director Hartley is more taken with boobs, Dennis Hopper's ever-questionable mental state and exploding prosthetics.
