The Last Days of Disco

Director: Whit Stillman
Year Released: 1998
Rating: 3.0

Several upper-crust grads pal around a very selective disco club in Manhattan, drinking, flirting and (sometimes) sleeping around, but mostly talking, talking, talking. As of right now (2009), this is the last film Stillman made, and it's a shame: he's skilled at showing the neurotic side of the so-called social elite and excels at witty banter. Generally, the idea of watching a bunch of Harvard grads with trust funds mope around and debate social dynamics (or discuss their problems with Lady and the Tramp ... which I happen to love) does not sound like fun, but Stillman recognizes that everyone - privileged or not - has some kind of problem that's worth taking into consideration. Chloe Sevigny's character gets kicked around a lot but learns from the kicking; the exceptional Chris Eigeman, Whit's alter ego, slithers his way through.
