Excessively - but mercifully - brief (there's a 1 hour running time) cult picture about teenage couple that find disillusionment on the roof of an apartment building after a gang of Beavis-and-Butthead types that rape the girl. She stays there overnight, sleeping in her own blood, and awakes the next day to the boy's sitting there, impotent and powerless. The two, shortly thereafter, begin a long conversation about how they want to kill each other, and continue to do so for the rest of the picture. Along the way, more perverts pop up (who enjoy 'water sports' and orgies) and the boy stabs them; eventually, the original crew of rapists appear on the roof - they are executed all the same. At the end, the boy and girl run around the rooftop (the girl is completely nude) singing an incoherent song and, yes, wind up committing suicide. Though Godard was obviously an inspiration, it's never clear there's any genuine intellectualism at play here - Wakamatsu's thesis amounts to nothing more than 'life is awful.' The closed atmosphere - the apartment roof - starts off by giving one Adam & Eve vibes, that the area is some sort of 'secret utopia' for the young couple, but the film never explores this concept. Only the cinematography, which is a high contrast black and white, adds anything beneficial to the mindless Z-grade carnage.
