Ravenous

Director: Antonia Bird
Year Released: 1999

Action/horror novelty set during the Mexican-American War where a mysterious man (Robert Carlyle) appears to a group of soldiers, tells of cannibalism taking place in some distant cave and then happily leads the ignorant to that very location. It's like a slightly high(er)-minded Troma release, an awkward mix of comedy and gore - it makes the most out of the (extremely primal) idea that how consuming the flesh of others allows one to 'absorb' their power and heal wounds, though when I went on a mental walk to figure out how this connects to American politics I was left mentally impoverished. I guess I should have figured something was off with this when I saw the tacky opening credits and noticed Friedrich Nietzsche's name spelled wrong in the epigraph.
