Cliff's Notes approach to the early years of imperialist Genghis Khan whose father was murdered, who was beaten, who was betrayed, who had all of his men murdered, who was imprisoned, who had his wife stolen from him and impregnated by different men and was beaten again but is probably best known today for helping two teenagers by the names of Bill and Ted get a totally excellent grade in history class. Bodrov's not big on segues and there are pacing problems - within a span of 30 seconds of screen time, Khan goes from being destitute to having (wham!) a whole army. Still, it's quite scenic and it's always a joy to see Tadanobu Asano, who's building up quite an impressive resume and continuing to stretch himself (though he's not given much dialogue, he's a strong visual presence).
