The Ring
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Year Released: 1927
Rating: 3.0
Intriguing silent love triangle fare also happens to be one of the only movies Hitchcock ever made involving a sport (in this case, boxing): carnival fighter "One Round" Jack gets bested by a heavyweight who also takes an interest in Jack's girlfriend, so Jack has to 'prove his worth' to her by beating the larger man in a rematch. Even in his late 20's Hitch had a good understanding of the language of film (there are a trio of 'rings': the boxing ring, the wedding ring and the snake-like arm band), elevating standard material to something visually appealing. The Hitchcock Brunette here (not even given a name - just "The Girl") is very mercurial - leading a sane man to wonder whether she's worth fighting for (Hitch's filmography is filled with equally difficult dames).
