Zazie dans le Métro
Director: Louis Malle
Year Released: 1960
Rating: 2.0
Obnoxious Zazie (Catherine Demongeot) seems to think Paris' Metro system is an amusement ride and is pissed as hell when the subway workers are on strike and she can't ride it, so she makes everyone around her (especially her line-dancing uncle, Phillippe Noiret) absolutely miserable with her fits and mischief. Malle uses every camera trick he can think of to make this look like a circus, and in doing so loses any sense of cohesion and makes it an exercise in pure technique (which I found exhausting and highly annoying). I thought of Alice in Wonderland while watching but this doesn't have the wit or complexity of the Carroll work.
