Saboteur
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Year Released: 1942
Rating: 3.0
Another one of Hitch's stories that involves a man falsely accused of a crime he didn't commit but unlike today's features that use the same premise, it's inventive and intriguing. He takes the easy route with some of his plot developments - a simple "cut to" eliminates gaps in time - the ending is entirely too abrupt, failing to add any sense of closure to the picture, and its storyline and characters (some of whom are Nazis) come across as being excessively patriotic (democracy foils fascism), but as an all-over-the-map adventure story that never fails to keep interest or cease coming up with new predicaments, it's well worth seeing (his direction is impeccable). Norman Lloyd is great as a sleazy terrorist. Saboteur foreshadows his masterpiece North By Northwest, which would come years later.
