Sunday Bloody Sunday

Director: John Schlesinger
Year Released: 1971
Rating: 2.0

Typical love triangle business without the screaming and hostility you'd expect: both Peter Finch and Glenda Jackson are in love in Murray Head, but Head's too busy dreaming of notoriety in New York City. It's a standard plot setup gussied up as 'art' - there are inserted images of telephone wires, a perplexing sequence involving a dead dog, several scenes about Finch's religion (if it is supposed to suggest inner conflict with Finch's homosexuality and Judaism, that isn't especially clear) and a concluding speech by Finch directed straight to the camera/audience. The performances by Finch and Jackson, however, are superb, and Head is suitably vacant.
