Blades of Glory
Director: Will Speck and Josh Gordon
Year Released: 2007
Rating: 0.5
Figure skating rivals Will Ferrell (playing the stock Will Ferrell character) and Jon Heder (playing Napoleon Dynamite again) team up against a rival skating duo for Olympic Gold - what I thought was originally a coded message about gay marriage (Ferrell and Heder being the 'first all-male pairs team') just turns into another lousy minimal-effort 'comedy.' If there are any laughs to be had in this, they're courtesy of Ferrell's drunken whoremongering, a brief clip of a skating competition in North Korea (you'll know it when you see it) and stand up comedian Nick Swardson's disturbingly hilarious few scenes as Heder's stalker (he has several of the best lines in the movie). The studio decision to keep this at PG-13 is a major liability, limiting comedic potential (it can't all be tasteful) and keeping it too 'clean' and 'safe.'
