Sweetie
Director: Jane Campion
Year Released: 1989
Rating: 2.0
Eccentric but unsatisfying film about two sisters - one's sexually repressed, the other is delusional and believes she can be famous. I suppose as a portrait of family dysfunction - or exaggerated autobiography, who knows (and isn't a sizeable portion of autobiography exaggerated?) - it is somewhat effective, but too much is weird-for-weird's-sake, with symbolism straight out of a Jung text. Anyone with a brain in their head would have sent the repressed sister to a shrink and the crazed sister back to the hospital, but that would have ended the movie far too early. Campion's portrait of unstable Janet Frame (An Angel at My Table) is less 'high camp' and just as memorable.
