Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Director: Larry Charles
Year Released: 2006
Rating: 3.0
Andy Kaufman-like Sacha Baron Cohen transforms himself into "Borat," a TV reporter from " Kazakhstan" and surveys "America," eventually coming to the realization that "America" is SuperPlasticGirl herself, Pamela Anderson. I believe the real brilliance behind this pseudo-documentary is that absolutely everything is a caricature (isn't the male American Dream to fuck Pam Anderson and the female American Dream to be Pam Anderson?): just as the "Kazakhstan" he portrays is a mockery of poverty, so his "America" is made up of frat boys, religious zealots, dumb Southerners and prudes (feminists, the "refined" upper-class). One knock against it is the fact that he takes on relatively easy targets, but comedy is black and white, not shades of gray - plus, any performer who's willing to get tea-bagged by an obscenely fat man (his producer!) is brave beyond words. At least the human that embodies Borat gets to go home to Isla Fisher at the end of the day.
