Seduced and Abandoned

Director: Pietro Germi
Year Released: 1964
Rating: 3.0

A young lothario impregnates the best looking (and youngest, alas) daughter of a Sicilian man, who becomes obsessed with the idea of his family's ruined honor. Like Divorce: Italian Style, it's very fast-paced and free-wheeling, but towards the end the overacting and screaming become a smite oppressive (though not enough to ruin in the picture - it's just that I personally have trouble responding to relentless scene-chewing). Saro Urzi's performance is so wild it's a miracle he didn't collapse during the filming; Stefania Sandrelli's teenager is screwed up and confused like every other teenager out there (and, like so many teenagers, she deserves better parents). Best line I've heard in a while: "It's a man's right to ask. It's a woman's duty to refuse."
