Clean
Director: Olivier Assayas
Year Released: 2004
Rating: 1.5
Or, Maggie Cheung Looks Pale. After her indie rock hubbie dies from a drug overdose, wife Cheung goes about the path to recovery (and reestablishing a relationship with her son) and surprisingly, it's not that difficult. Dramatically inert, this at least has Assayas' usual crisp visuals and off-beat score (not to mention appearances by Tricky and the indie outfit Metric) as well as a memorable performance by Nick Nolte, who brings his own personal troubles with drugs to the screen (which was most likely Assayas' intention). With regards to the singing: Ms. Cheung should be grateful she can act.
