Love Affair, or the Case of the Missing Switchboard Operator
Director: DuĊĦan Makavejev
Year Released: 1967
Rating: 2.5
A romantic fling between a switchboard operator and a Marxist is mixed in with a whole variety of stock footage of sex therapists, nude models and, in keeping with Makavejev's real love, politics. The mixture doesn't exactly contribute to the clarity of the piece - it all seems so haphazardly tossed together - but at times I felt like coherence was hardly the point: it's all about tone. Nobody makes movies this intellectually daring any more - except maybe Emir Kusturica, who's been somewhat quiet of late - and it's a damn shame.
