Story of a Love Affair
Director: Michelangelo Antonioni
Year Released: 1950
Rating: 2.0
Standard love triangle stuff in the James M. Cain tradition - jealous husband hires detective to investigate his young wife's past, landing her back in the arms of an ineffectual ex-boyfriend and a plot to kill the husband. It's more 'ordinary' in structure than Antonioni's later - and more influential - works, although his technique already seems to be developed, and of course his Marxist politics are already being put on display, showing the bourgeoisie to be miserable despite their riches (and women to be completely untrustworthy). Like Visconti's similar Ossessione, I was more taken with the style than with the subject matter.
