Barbarella
Director: Roger Vadim
Year Released: 1968
Rating: 2.0
The first five minutes establish Jane Fonda as one sexy dame and had me very much at attention (I've said it before: I like 'em skinny), only for the rest of the movie to disappoint, even as camp. The effects are both trippy and cheesy (let's not forget those gratuitous costume changes), but Leonard Maltin's right: though eccentric and not without its moments (Durand Durand's "pleasure machine," for example), it's not exactly funny (just like another unsuccessful parody, 1966's Our Man Flint with James Coburn). To quote the late Rick James, "Cocaine's a helluva drug." LSD must be too.
