An angry attack against Vietnam-era America by an Italian filmmaker that had some faith in the student rebellion at the time, embodied by Mark Frechette, who signs in at the police station as "Carl Marx," tussles around the barren wasteland with his Eve (Daria Halprin) and is martyred, more or less. It's too angry to be clear-headed in its purpose, and the explosive ending, in which a luxury house, a television set, a rack of clothes and other items are blown up (in the lead female's mind) just seems desperate. As with even lesser Antonioni (Red Desert, for one), there are intriguing little details - like the lead female's dress becoming two-toned after brushing up against flowing water - and the soundtrack by Pink Floyd is trippy (though not their best work).
