Hi, Mom!
Director: Brian De Palma
Year Released: 1970
Rating: 2.0
Vietnam Vet (Robert De Niro) can't decide if he's a pornographer, an actor or a terrorist (or even all three) in this 'comedy' by Brian De Palma that shows that Brian De Palma is not that good at comedy. With no plot to speak of, it's episodic and doesn't congeal as a 'movie,' though parts are quirky and pleasurable, like all of the scenes with porn maven Allen Garfield and the discontented, disillusioned America reacting to the apartment bombings in the third act (ah, how worldviews have changed in a few decades). The middle of the movie, with a bunch of African American radicals forcing all-too liberal whites to eat black-eyed peas and smack them around, reminds me of Robert Downey's Putney Swope but is more mean-spirited than funny.
