The Devil's Rejects

Director: Rob Zombie
Year Released: 2005
Rating: 1.0

My major gripe with Zombie's debut, House of 1000 Corpses, was that it spent too much time referencing classic horror movies to be its own horror movie, and that complaint only gets magnified in light of his second feature film, which is almost all homage to horror movies (and classic rock) of the 70's (The Hills Have Eyes' Michael Berryman appears, so does Ken Foree from Dawn of the Dead). Romeroesque subtext is nowhere to be found - I'm not buying the 'religious hypocrisy' stuff, either (I saw Frailty) - so it's not exactly 'about' anything except its own technique, and Zombie's preference for nonstop cursing instead of actual dialogue, Z-grade acting and extreme close-ups of grotesque faces. This is humorless bloodlust with no purpose.
