Since Otar Left

An old woman's daughter and granddaughter hide the death of her only son from her in order not to break her heart by forging letters and photos from him. It's the same basic conceit as Good Bye, Lenin! except the grandmother here is a crotchety, difficult Stalinist (wherein the mother in Good Bye, Lenin! was a Socialist) who clearly doesn't like her daughter or granddaughter nearly as much as her son. Goes for sentimentality where it earns none; the ending, in particular, fumbles desperately for its sweet good-byes.
