A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy
Director: Woody Allen
Year Released: 1982
Rating: 1.0
This is a lightweight version of Allen's trademark "neurotic" comedy formula that's been diluted and sent in a time machine back to the early 1900's. Everyone's crazy for Mia Farrow - whose appeal can never be explained (reasons why anyone would want to cast terminally vapid Mary Steenburgen in anything are also nowhere to be found) - and it's evident that the only one Allen wrote any good lines for is himself (although he does have Tony Roberts done up to be like Erland Josephson which I guess is a compliment). He floundered when trying to emulate Bergman with Interiors and his Fellini imitation, Stardust Memories, didn't work so well - this effort, following those two, is a poor combination of Shakespearean romanticism and early Renoir.
