Big Deal on Madonna Street
Director: Mario Monicelli
Year Released: 1958
Rating: 2.0
Heist movie about a pack of half-wits who attempt to break into a safe and bathe themselves in riches - it's obvious none of it's going to work when their "mentor" is Toto. Unlike successful robbery movies - ones in which there's a chance the gangsters will actually complete their task and make the effort to get away with the loot - this film's too distracted by its own subplots (mostly involving horny Italian guys girl-hopping) to properly analyze the heist itself. The payoff is fairly charming even though it takes wading through a lot of silliness to get to it.
