Blind Chance
Director: Krzysztof Kieślowski
Year Released: 1987
Rating: 2.0
Three different outcomes are shown for a medical student based on whether or not he catches a train, and to be honest, none of them are good. While I generally like Kieslowski's look at fate and the results of choices, this film strikes me as being particularly glib and nihilistic, especially in the final image. The lead is not very charismatic and is basically a puppet for the plot's machinations: it's less about him - since all three outcomes has him in three completely different roles Kieslowski doesn't believe in willpower or a 'fixed' identity that's able to transcend circumstance - than about how clever the story can be. Kieslowski's The Double Life of Veronique twists the conceit in a more productive direction: there, two completely different versions of the same woman alter each other's lives.
