Notebook on Cities and Clothes (1989) review

While Yohji Yamamoto - whose clothes I really like but cannot afford - awkwardly struggles to form coherent sentences in English to explain his talent and the 'deeper meaning' of his work, director Wim Wenders awkwardly struggles to conceptualize the material and make a cohesive statement about the ever-changing world. What could have been a thorough examination of the inner workings of the fashion world and maybe a critique of its essential superficiality is sidestepped for Wenders' banal musings on the lack of 'reality' and the use of multiple screens within screens; the music, which is truly awful, drowns out both men.
