The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea
Director: Lewis John Carlino
Year Released: 1976
Rating: 2.0
Adaptation of the Yukio Mishima novel has none of the ambiguity or calculated insidiousness of that work; Carlino divides his film into part Love Story and part Youth Gone Wild, and it has the feel of a soap opera. The director harps on one of Mishima's messages - the leader of the "secret organization's" assessment of adults as hopeless causes and therefore disposable - while relying heavily on romance (never apparent in the book) and outlandish performances (only Kris Kristofferson plays his role correctly and with a sense of genuine fatigue).
