Shame

Director: Ingmar Bergman
Year Released: 1968
Rating: 3.5

Horrific view of war and the effects on one's emotional state, and in particular, how Max von Sydow's coward/artist goes from passive weakling to take-no-prisoners murderer by the end of the film, when pushed too far into the proverbial corner. Most remarkably avoids the details of the battle and particulars of the civil war: it's strictly from the viewpoint of the scared and confused villagers who are stuck in a conflict they can't comprehend and can only try to get away. Ambiguity works in its favor, and the ending is considerably unnerving.
