She Had to Say Yes
Director: Busby Berkeley and George Amy
Year Released: 1933
Rating: 2.5
Touchy piece this one: some have accused it of misogyny since the lead character is a female (Loretta Young) and the picture details her being 'handed' from one man to another, all of whom abuse and use her. Yes, it's a little one-sided - there are no 'good' men to balance it out - but there is something of merit here, and it's mainly of historical value: from past conversations with my grandmother, she informed me of the horrendous sexual harassment in the workplace, where predatory males were constantly hunting after women, and if the women did not comply they would be fired. The ending is abrupt and Young has to pick between two sleazy men - but before she goes with the one instead of the other, she gives a speech about choosing the 'lesser evil'. Since there is nowhere else to go, and nothing left to do, she has to settle for one of them - the movie leaves her in a Catch-22.
