'Historical' comedy that lampoons the French Revolution (not the likeliest of events to be mocked, but never mind) that is inspired by Richard Lester and predates Mel Brooks' similar efforts like History of the World, Part I and Blazing Saddles. Like Brooks' lesser films, the film is uneven and only sporadically funny, and the rest of the cast is carried by Gene Wilder's talent and timing - especially Donald Sutherland, who no one should ever mistake for a comedian.
