Lust for Life
Director: Vincente Minnelli
Year Released: 1956
Rating: 2.0
Condensed portrait of famed artist Vincent Van Gogh, based on the book by Irving Stone. Kirk Douglas completely overacts as the eccentric Van Gogh, muttering lines like, "I want to paint the will of God" with cheesy bravado. You shiver when he gets all excited because you know the stuff coming out of his mouth is going to be philosophically corny and religiously sappy. It worked when he was Spartacus ... it doesn't here.
