Fassbinder's last film on Earth is a plodding look at an actress who goes mental after her career falls apart and the investigation of the 'neurologist' who takes 'care' of her. The scenery is so white it looks like it was bleached clean - 2001: A Space Odyssey is murky in comparison - and the lunatic woman angle is Sunset Boulevard as treated by Douglas Sirk. It's as disconnected and hesitant as anything the director's ever done - even the previous year's Lola - and watching it is no pleasant task.
