Frida

Director: Julie Taymor
Year Released: 2002
Rating: 0.5

Horrid biopic of the Mexican painter that fails due to the lack of charisma and talent of its lead actress (Salma Hayek can not carry a picture) and Taymor's lack of material to work with (her visual flourishes are appealing but excessive; it's as if she's struggling to make it amount to something). After an hour of Frida fighting with then making love to shameless whore-master Diego Rivera on and off again, it's obvious there's no place to go (and 'gasp' she has bisexual leanings!). Geoffrey Rush - who has a tendency to liven up many a dull picture - is sub-par as Trotsky (I was so looking forward to his appearance from the beginning, too).
