The Seventh Cross

Director: Fred Zinnemann
Year Released: 1944
Rating: 2.0

Spencer Tracy and six other men escape from a concentration camp in Germany (for political dissent, I believe) - the six are captured and killed, leaving Tracy the last man on the run. The intent is to show how Tracy's pessimistic view of human nature is transformed into optimism - by people he either knew or didn't know risking their lives to save him - but it's never made clear in Tracy's performance or in the script how the alteration in worldview changes; in fact, other than his last speech saying he's grateful for help, his face always registers disgust. While the scenes move right along, there's an overabundance of voice-over.
