Safety Last!

Director: Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor
Year Released: 1923
Rating: 3.0

Despite some sloppy storytelling (the screenplay and story are secondary features), this is a bright and fun silent with average-guy Harold Lloyd, who scrambles like a madman to impress his fiancé by pretending to be the general manager of a department store (she's a high-maintenance gal, shallowly judging her beau on his upward mobility and income). Does not possess the pure perfection of Keaton or Chaplin, but a rousing effort nonetheless, showing some absolute movie magic in the skyscraper-climbing stunt which is so flawlessly executed it doesn't seem real at all.
