Black Sunday

Director: Mario Bava
Year Released: 1960
Rating: 1.5

Mystical hokum about a mistress of evil who gets tortured and buried in a special crypt - centuries later, her 'spirit' comes back and plagues some curious locals. It's saved only by its crisp black and white cinematography (by Bava) and the director's icky interest in eyes (which predates Fulci's later-day obsession): stabbing them, having bugs crawl inside them, having them form in skeletal faces, etc. Sample dialogue (and I'm paraphrasing only slightly): "I curse you in the name of Satan!"
