Archangel

Director:  Guy Maddin
Year Released:  1990
Rating:  2.0

Cheeky 'recreation' of early silents made by a man who must obsessively study pictures from the 20's - if you showed it to someone who knew nothing about Maddin he/she would be completely fooled. It's much more captivating than Twilight of the Ice Nymphs - and also, at times, hilarious (especially when one character is disemboweled, and, because of budget restraints, sausages were used in the place of prosthetic intestines) - but enigmatic and irritating: whenever a clear narrative starts to form, Maddin immediately scrambles things up and you're lost again. Worth seeing for its surrealism (and style) alone, but if you're looking for depth or emotion, what you're left with is a cheap joke.
