The Heiresses

Director: Marcelo Martinessi
Year Released: 2018
Rating: 1.0

Two women, Chela (Ana Brun) and Chiquita (Margarita Irún), who come from money and have been living together for decades, are separated when Chiquita is sent to jail (for fraud), leaving Chela to stay behind, sell off their belongings and act as an Uber driver for wealthy women.  It gets the atmosphere right - a crowded (and almost communal) "prison," long nights down narrow streets, that Grey Gardens-esque house - but it misses the part where the audience should be lead to care even a little bit about these old biddies and the inheritance they squandered.  Later on, Chela becomes enthralled by a younger woman named Angy (Ana Ivanova), but even that doesn't light a match under the movie (so to speak).  Somehow, this mediocre 'romance' was deemed 'controversial' because there are apparently individuals in Paraguay who still don't believe there are women sexually attracted and committed to each other, but you can't spell the name of the country without "g" "a" and "y" now can you?
