Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander), food delivery person and amateur MMA fighter, goes in search of her lost (and rich) Pop (Dominic West), who might have found out something about a long-deceased Japanese Queen named Himiko and her sacred tomb on a remote island but never returned. Movies based on video games are usually failures and while this isn't what you'd call 'good' - the script is quite basic and 'lifts' some of the obstacles from the game itself (you know, spikes coming out of the floor, falling tiles, puzzles involving stones) - at least Vikander's up for the challenge, having toned up considerably for the role. The cast is better than expected (it must be tough times for Kristen Scott Thomas and Derek Jacobi) considering the pedestrian nature of the thing ... and there's a scene at the end for the fanboys wondering where her dual-wielding pistols were the entire time.
