Ocean's Eight

Director: Gary Ross
Year Released: 2018
Rating: 2.0

Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), sister of the deceased (?) Danny Ocean (played by George Clooney in the remake of Ocean's Eleven), gets out of prison after being framed by her ex-boyfriend and devises a new plan for revenge: with a group of fellow female criminal-types (including Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter and Mindy Kaling), she intends to steal a 150 million dollar Cartier necklace from Anne Hathaway during a gala at the MET. Ross is trying to replicate Soderbergh's 'fashionable swagger,' but like a laser-printed facsimile it's not the same: at every turn it shouldn't make you question the plausibility of the heist and the 'techniques' used in 'pulling it off' - if you have to make a concerted effort to be 'hip' and 'cool' you probably aren't. It also helps that when a movie ends, you're not left wondering why none of the main characters are in the pokey wearing orange.
