Kindergarten Teacher, The

Director:  Sara Colangelo
Year Released:  2018
Rating:  1.5

Lisa (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a school teacher who has been taking night classes in poetry (with Gael GarcĂa Bernal as her professor), has a student she's convinced is a prodigy and becomes driven to "protecting him" from the rest of the world (not to mention stealing his poems and passing them off as her own). Colangelo based this on Nadav Lapid's 2014 film, but didn't correct the flaws - that Lisa would have been investigated for strange behavior well before the ending, the child's poetry is no big deal, the fact that Lisa is a reprehensible person, that some of the child's actions feel script-driven instead of 'natural' - although the central point remains valid, that some artists do need to be coddled and their development should be encouraged (no matter the age). One bit of information from the original was omitted: the kid was just reciting pieces written by a relative and is not some super-genius, but I guess Colangelo wanted to spare her audience (and her lead) that slap in the face.
