Thelma

Director:  Joachim Trier
Year Released:  2017
Rating:  2.0

The title loner (Eili Harboe) goes to university in Oslo - away from her helicopter parents (who are also religious zealots) - and is trying to study and fit in, but she starts having seizures ... and develops feelings for classmate Anja (Kaya Wilkins). While I hoped it would amount to a little more than a dumb metaphor for Homosexual Panic, that's about all Trier brings to the screen ... oh, that and a touch of the 'Supernatural' too (Thelma is psychically able to trap her little brother under ice, set her Dad on fire and make Anja vanish). I guess the audience is supposed to think about out whether or not her "powers" are "real" or just in her head, but it's not like it matters: it's a young woman from a super uptight upbringing making peace with wanting to fool around with skinny girls. Amen to that, right?
