Death Wish

Director:  Eli Roth
Year Released:  2018
Rating:  1.0

Dr. Paul Kersey (Bruce Willis) has his wife (Elisabeth Shue) and daughter (Camila Morrone) gunned down by robbers in violent ol' Chicago and then has to weigh the whole Hippocratic Oath versus a Need for Revenge (he settles on the latter). Anyone that's seen the Charles Bronson original should know where it's going, and it's familiar ground for Roth, who's big on exploitation fare - the movie seems to argue that it's okay to take matters in your own hands since the police are inept and America is a Dangerous Place, which is deeply troubling in 'these times,' even with everything we know about Chiraq. I guess we're supposed to 'buy' Willis' "inner turmoil" (about saving lives as opposed to taking them), but let's be real: it's Bruce Willis. Not only is it a stretch to accept him as a surgeon, it's harder to believe he'd never purchased a weapon before.
