The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter

Director: Jody Hill
Year Released: 2018
Rating: 0.5

"Famed outdoorsman" Buck (Josh Brolin), who's never without his loyal cameraman Don (Danny McBride), takes his son Jaden (Montana Jordan) out to the wilderness to track and shoot a deer - some sort of "right of manhood" nonsense - but Jaden is too preoccupied with his phone and calling his girlfriend back in civilization, and Buck is missing his ex-wife (Carrie Coon). You'd assume by putting together Brolin and McBride (who also 'contributed' to the screenplay) there'd be at least a few belly laughs, but it actually plays out like a sappy father-son bonding experience, where, through arguments and an errant bullet (that hits Don) and a strange rafting expedition (on an air mattress), they Grow To Understand Each Other and Get Ready to Cherish the Memories That Will Last a Lifetime (reality is never so simple). There are people who get their kicks hiking and camping and climbing and all that sort of unwashed, tiring 'fun,' and to each his/her own, but I'm with the kid: you can find me in the Marriott.
