Mulan

Director: Barry Cook and Tony Bancroft
Year Released: 1998
Rating: 1.5

A rare dud from Disney - it's basically "let's Westernize the East some more!" with Mulan as the aggressive feminist-trailblazer (think Susan B. Anthony) who takes her wounded father's place in the army to fend off gravel-voiced foes. There were five screenwriters - which amounts to four more than needed to make such atrocious conversations (see the witty repartee of The Emperor's New Clothes) - and two directors, and somehow everyone was on the wrong page. Uninspired from start to finish; Eddie Murphy adds a little bit of charm as a little dragon trying to redeem himself.
