Heavy Metal

Director: Gerald Potterton
Year Released: 1981
Rating: 1.5

Chintzy cult item based on juvenile stories from Heavy Metal magazine, with the varied scenarios linked together by the existence of a glowing green orb called the Loc-Mar that transcends time and space ... and causes people to melt. Crude in every conceivable way (especially the animation, which makes Tom and Jerry look like Miyazaki), it contains a steady stream of gory deaths, explosions, animated boobs (perfect in shape, too!) - it's a fantasy world best suited to the likes of Beavis and Butthead. Ironically, most of the bands selected for the soundtrack don't exactly fit into the 'heavy metal' musical genre (Devo? Journey? Donald Fagen?) ... the same goes for Elmer Bernstein.
