Life-long friends Roz (Robin Wright) and Lil (Naomi Watts) each have one son and live next to the ocean in an idyllic Australian setting but things become complicated (somewhat) when Roz sleeps with Lil's son and Lil sleeps with Roz's son. Though Watts and Wright are both fantastic, much of this fails to ring true in the slightest - it's as if Fontaine and Christopher Hampton (working from a short story by Doris Lessing) decided to eschew a general sense of human behavior and try to make what I'm figuring is a purely theoretical Freudian concept (the two women are sublimating their desire for each other) a plausible movie. The way everyone handles this highly perverse set-up so relatively calmly - aside from the third act when the sons are forced by Wright to marry women their own ages and Drama needs to kick in - is downright absurd. That Nobel Prize winner Lessing chose to keep this a short story says a lot.
